The Collectability Factor II [Fandom]
It looks like Marvel's putting the words of Collectability Factor I, a Bill Jemas press conference in October, into action, and printing fewer copies of comic books to generate "limited access." Why? To fabricate "hotness" and suckle at the teat of the speculator aftermarket boom and bust cycle- at the expense of comic book readers.

If the comics industry is to survive, we need to increase access- i.e. make more copies available, get them back in the newsstands and other outlets, and lower the price.

Belief in the business plan remains [Inside (Dead- membership req'd once story is archived)]
I can't stress enough that Comicon.com Splash has provided great commentary and up-to-the-minute links re: the Stan Lee Media saga. Check 'em out. (I wish Splash items had permanent links, or were at least archived.)

Stan Lee Media suspends operations [Reuters on Yahoo with Splash on the ball]

I was hoping Dr. Strange's creator would succeed. But let's face it, Stan Lee Media is a content dot.com. The content was comic-book-esque, which is cooler than say, articles on Salon, and the business model wasn't just the dreaded "eyes for advertising dollars" per se but rather creating characters for movies and other big paydays- but I guess it was too little and not nearly fast enough for cyberspace. The site wasn't great but it didn't have a chance. I have no idea how it burned through so much money so fast.

Charge against a Texas comics retailer selling adult manga to adults is dismissed [Go CBLDF!]

Comic books are not just for children. No medium (the internet, for example) is just for children. Yes, a lot of material is not appropriate for children, and we should do what we can as a society to limit their exposure to such things. But if we sanitize and dumb down our entire society to the level of what is okay for children, then the cost is way too high.

Public Service Announcement

I want to remind all of my readers, and a couple of recent writers to Marvel Comics Letters Pages who shall remain nameless, that a Marvel No-Prize is not awarded for simply pointing out an error. It's certainly not given out for pointing out coloring errors and other dumb things like that. To land a No-Prize you must offer a great explanation for the error such that story continuity is no longer messed up. Don't just tear down, build up. Be a creative contributor and have fun with it, don't just be a snot.

I wish I could read the language, but it seems obvious from skimming the English words that this Doctor Extrano page must be an excellent summary of Doc's full history, from the Dr. Droom prototype who is now Dr. Druid through to Ditkopolis.

Go see Unbreakable! Now!

I just saw the movie Unbreakable with my Wonder Woman Charisse tonight, and it was excellent. M. Night Shyamalan, you've done it again. But more importantly- every comic book fan must see this movie. I had no idea there was a comic book aspect to the film ahead of time. It was great. And they were linked to hieroglyphics, a concept I've always found cool. And an old Pixies song "I've Been Tired" was used effectively as well. What a thrill. I had fun, can't you tell?
